Clemens Fuest, born in 1968, is the President of the ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich e.V., Managing Director of CESifo GmbH, Professor of Economics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and Director of the Center for Economic Studies (CES) at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
He is a member of various prestigious institutions, including the Scientific Advisory Board at the Federal Ministry of Finance, the European Academy of Sciences, and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Foundation for Market Economy (Kronberger Kreis) and the Foundation for Family Businesses. From 2018 to 2021, he served as President of the International Institute of Public Finance (IIPF), and from 2019 to 2022, he was a member of the Franco-German Council of Economic Experts.
In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Gustav Stolper Prize by the Verein für Socialpolitik in 2013 and the Hanns Martin Schleyer Prize for 2018 in 2019. He received an honorary doctorate from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2017. In July 2023, he was honored with the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art.
His research focuses on economic and fiscal policy, international taxation, tax policy, and European integration.
Before his appointment in Munich, he held professorial positions at the universities of Cologne (2001–2008), Oxford (2008–2013), and Mannheim (2013–2016).
Prof. Fuest is also a prolific author of books and has contributed numerous op-eds and commentaries on current economic policy issues in national and international journals. He frequently writes for newspapers such as Handelsblatt, FAZ, Die Zeit, SZ, WirtschaftsWoche, Financial Times, and Wall Street Journal.
